I’ve been thinking a lot about algorithms lately — not just what they show me, but why they show it. And who benefits when they do. That question took on new significance after I finished “Careless People: A Cautionary Tale of Power, Greed, and Lost Idealism” by Sarah Wynn-Williams, a former Facebook insider. The book is a scathing and sobering look at how some of the most powerful minds in tech built one of the most dangerous influence engines in modern history — and then failed to stop it when it started causing harm.
